Jesus Influence Milgram

Speaking Up – Shaping the World We Live In

We explore the contradiction in Jesus’ time, where religious leaders misused their authority while Jesus used His authority to bring healing and hope. Let’s delve into Milgram’s experiment, revealing how authority figures can manipulate individuals, even in modern society. Highlighting the importance of combating toxic cultures by encouraging open communication and questioning in leadership positions. For non-leaders, emphasizing the value of asking clarifying questions without jeopardizing job security. By fostering a healthy company culture we can create positive change and be the person Jesus would be proud of.

How Much Influence We All Possess

It’s incredible how much power we possess to shape the world around us, often without even realizing it. In our daily routines, we may overlook the profound impact our choices can have on those in our sphere of influence. However, it’s crucial to recognize that our actions, words, and even our faith can transform lives. Let’s explore the concept of speaking up and its potential to motivate and inspire positive change.

The Authority of Influence

The Contradiction in Jesus’ Time

And they brought to Him a paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. And seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man who was paralyzed, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.” And some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming!” And Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, pick up your stretcher and go home.”And he got up and went home. But when the crowds saw this, they were awestruck, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Matthew 9:2-8

Examining the Gospel of Matthew, we encounter a powerful contradiction prevalent during Jesus’ era. Religious leaders wielded their authority to favor select groups while disregarding the needs of those who were marginalized and desperate for help. Jesus challenged this mindset, showcasing His authority through acts of healing and forgiveness. By doing so, He not only transformed the lives of individuals but also instilled hope in those surrounding them.

Confronting the Truth

Speaking Out Against Injustice:

Many individuals find themselves in situations where they grapple with obeying superiors’ commands that conflict with their personal convictions. They may fear negative consequences, such as damaging their careers or reputations. However, it is vital to acknowledge the detrimental impact that occurs when authority figures abuse their power. Why, then, do people sometimes remain silent despite knowing deep down that it is wrong?

Milgram’s Experiment: A Stark Reminder

Understanding Milgram’s Experiment:

Stanley Milgram’s controversial experiment sheds light on the issue of obedience to authority. Volunteers, referred to as “teachers,” were instructed by an authority figure, the “conductor,” to administer electric shocks to actors posing as learners. Although the shocks were simulated, the experiments are now considered unethical due to the lack of disclosure, informed consent, and subsequent debriefing. Nonetheless, Milgram’s study offers valuable insights into how average individuals respond to authority. (Have linked to the documentaries regarding Milgram’s experiment at the end of this article.)

Unfortunately, Milgram’s Experiment Persists

Milgram’s experiment provides compelling evidence of how authority figures can manipulate their influence for corporate agendas, often at the expense of employees and customers. Shockingly, such situations persist in modern society, where managers prioritize meeting deadlines and profits over ethical conduct.

Toxic Culture: Breaking the Cycle

Reflecting on my own experiences, I recall working for a company that prioritized meeting deadlines and maximizing profits at the expense of integrity. In one instance, a manager chose to ship defective products in large quantities, fully aware of the issues but fearing the repercussions of notifying superiors. This dilemma exemplifies how leadership failing to encourage open communication and concern hinders a company’s progress.

Combating Misuse of Influence

What Leaders Must Do

To combat these challenges, leaders must be mindful of how they employ their influence. Encouraging team members to question direction, suggesting alternative approaches, or allowing additional time for finding optimal solutions fosters an environment where concerns can be voiced. By empowering those under their care, leaders open the door to fresh perspectives and prevent long-term damage to their organizations.

Taking a Stand from Within

Non-Leadership Positions

For individuals in non-leadership roles, it is essential to ask clarifying questions without jeopardizing job security. By seeking a deeper understanding of the company’s objectives and proposed solutions, you can contribute to a healthy exchange of ideas. Remember to adopt a neutral tone, avoiding accusations, and instead expressing a genuine desire to comprehend the underlying goals. If your concerns continue to be met with resistance, it might be worth considering if the job aligns with your long-term aspirations.

Fostering a Healthy Company Culture

In a thriving company culture, questioning the “why” behind directions should be not only accepted but also encouraged from every team member. By fostering an environment where openness is valued and expected, organizations can avoid falling into the traps of Milgram’s experiment. It is crucial to create a space where team members can voice their concerns and contribute to meaningful change.

Be the Change

Let us remember that we have the power to shape our world through speaking up and taking a stand against injustice. Recalls and ethical breaches continue to occur today, emphasizing the need for leaders to value the voices of their team members and for individuals to be courageous in expressing their concerns. By striving to be the person Jesus would be proud of, we can create a society that values integrity, empathy, and positive change.
